Walk-off Single From Andrews Leads Softball to Comeback Win in Rubber Match vs. Stony Brook

Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – A walk-off single off the bat of junior second baseman Amber Andrews led the University of Hartford softball team to a 2-1, come from behind victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves on Sunday afternoon. With the rubber match win, the Hawks, who were the home team in the series despite playing on the road, starts America East Conference play with a 2-1 record and improves to 7-14 overall.

After starting off the bottom half of the first frame with two hits, Hartford's bats were held silent for the next five innings, knocking just one hit off of Stony Brook's starting pitcher, Jane Sallen. That all changed for the Hawks, though, in their final at-bats as they faced a 1-0 deficit and a new hurler inside of the circle in Lauren Cukrov, who threw 10 scoreless innings the previous day.

Sophomore Jackie Kelly led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, and was replaced on the base paths by classmate Peyton Fisher. Fisher then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of senior Melani Maxwell and in the next at-bat, sophomore Margaret Betz put the game-tying run on third base after looping a single into left field.

The Hawks then found themselves with the bases loaded after senior Erica Phelps was hit by a pitch, setting the scene for Ambers who plated both the game-tying and the go-ahead run in walk-off fashion, lining a base hit down the middle of the infield off of the newly inserted pitcher Christine Lucido.

Andrews' heroics were backed by a solid performance by Hawks' ace Zuzana Kudernatschova. After earning her second career shutout yesterday by tossing 11 scoreless innings, 10 of which went without a Stony Brook hit, to lead her team to the 1-0 win, she went on to allow just one run on three hits while striking out three for her second-straight victory.

That lone Seawolves' run was plated in the top half of the fifth inning. Melissa Phelan earned a lead-off walk and her pinch runner, Brianne Iannetti, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Kudernastchova induced Combs into an infield groundout, Shayla Giosa put the Seawolves on the board, plating the speedy Iannetti on a single to left center field to give her team the 1-0 advantage.

Sallen went 5.0 innings for the Seawolves, striking out three. Cukrov suffered the loss, while Lucido faced Hartford's final batter, Andrews, but was not credited with the setback.

The Hawks hit the road for their next four games, both of which will be played in the tri-state area. Hartford will first play a doubleheader at Rider on Tuesday (2:30) before heading to Rutgers for a pair of games on Wednesday (2:30 p.m.).
