Newcomb Mows Down 12, Hawks Score 4-3 Victory over Binghamton on Sunday

Box Score

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore lefty Sean Newcomb struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Hawks took a 4-3 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats (14-9, 5-4 America East) in the series finale on Sunday. The Hawks (5-18, 4-5 AE) was led offensively going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Hartford scattered four total hits against the Bearcats with Ryan Lukach and Nick Dummar joining Alfonso on the offensive end. Adam Touhey recorded the only other RBI for Hartford, while Lukach would score twice.

The victory on the hill for Newcomb was his second of the season, while freshman Jeremy Charles came out of the pen for a four-out save, his second of the season. Overall, Newcomb allowed one hit, a double in the third inning, and one unearned run, while walking two. Charles didn't allow a hit in his time on the mound, while striking out two. Brian Murphy would pitch two-thirds of middle relief, allowing two earned runs on two hits and a walk.

Binghamton took an early lead on Sunday, scoring in the top of the first thanks in part to a one-out walk issued to John Howell. Howell then advanced 180 feet on a stolen base and an error on the throw down and scored thanks to Jake Thomas sacrificing himself to center field.

After being retired in order in the first, the Hawks made noise in the second collecting two runs on two hits a walk and a sacrifice. The right fielder, Lukach continued his hot hitting from Saturday's second game, leading off the inning with a single to center field and advanced to second on a walk issued to center fielder Chris DelDebbio. Catcher James Alfonso would follow with the Hawks second hit of the game, a single to right field which allowed DelDebbio to advance 180 feet and Lukach to score the game-tying run. DelDebbio would become the go ahead run two batters later thanks to Touhey, the left fielder, who gave himself up with a sacrifice to right.

Hartford added two more runs to its tally in the fourth inning courtesy of a pair of defensive miscues on the Bearcats. The first came on the leadoff batter as Lukach laid down a bunt just in front of the plate that pitcher Jay Lynch couldn't control allowing the junior to reach safely. With one out in the books, Alfonso would connect on his second hit of the afternoon sneaking one just out of the reach of Lynch and second baseman Daniel Nevares that put runners on the corners.

Alfonso would advance himself 90 feet on a stolen base before he and Lukach became the next two runs thanks to the second error in the inning, this time a throwing error charged to third baseman Brian Ruby.

The Bearcats would rally for two in the eighth, pulling within one with three outs remaining. With two outs from Murphy in relief of Newcomb, Binghamton would get things started with a double through the right side from Zach Blanden. After Howell worked a one to put two runners on, Thomas would secure his second RBI of the game as he knocked Blanden home on a single to center, which also put runners on the corners.

After Ruby was hit by a pitch loading the bases, the Bearcats would get their second run of the inning courtesy to a balk called against Charles, who came in to close out the game. Hartford wasn't able to threaten in the bottom of the eight, but it wouldn't matter as Charles came back to the hill and retired the Bearcats in order with a pair of strikeouts to close out the contest.

Hartford will continue a seven-game home stand on Tuesday when they welcome the Holy Cross Crusaders to Fiondella Field for a mid-week test. The Hawks and Crusaders are scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
