Softball Drops Series Opener versus Binghamton 3-0

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –
The Hartford softball team was held scoreless as they opened a three-game series with the Binghamton Bearcats, falling 3-0. The Hawks and Bearcats played just one game on Saturday due to field conditions and will close out the series with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11:00 a.m. Prior to Sunday's doubleheader; the Hawks will honor their four seniors: Jordan Haines, Kate Wacyk, Melani Maxwell and Erica Phelps.

Both teams finished with four hits in the game with all eight hits coming from different players. Three of the Hawks four hits came from the beginning of their lineup with leadoff hitter Amber Andrews, Jenice Aloyo and Wazyk all finishing 1-of-3. Third baseman Jackie Kelly also finished 1-of-3 to round out the Hawks hits.

Zuzana Kudernatschova pitched a complete game for the Hawks finishing with three runs allowed, two earned, on four hits. She also struck out seven batters while walking just one. Her counterpart for the Bearcats Laney Demi earned her ninth win on the hill finishing a scoreless game allowing four hits and striking out game-best 10 batters.

After Kudernatschova retired the first six in order, the Bearcats mustered the first hit of the game, a single to left field from third baseman Mikala King. She would become the eventual first run after advancing on a passed ball and able to score on an error on the Hawks second baseman as he throw to first sailed into the outfield.

Hartford would have 12 of its first 13 batters retired in order with the lone runner courtesy of a hit batter. The Hawks first hit of the game came in the bottom of the fifth, a leadoff single to right field from Kelly, the third baseman. Kelly would be stranded at first as the next three were retired in order.

The Seawolves added their final two runs in the sixth inning courtesy of one swing of the bat from designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh as she drove in both runs thanks to a home run to dead center field. Her home run allowed right fielder Sydney Harbaugh who reached on an infield single.

The Hawks threatened in the bottom of the sixth putting runners on the corners before Demi forced the Hawks into a doubleheader to get out of trouble. The Hawks began the inning with three straight singles from the top three in the lineup. Demi would then retire the Hawks in order, the last two on strikeouts.
