WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – One swing of the bat by University of Hartford senior Kate Wacyk was all it took to help the Hawks' softball team make history on Sunday afternoon, as her walk-off home run lifted her team to victory and clinched the America East Conference series against Boston University for the first time in school history. With two outs in the bottom half of the seventh, Wacyk sent a two-run bomb high over the fence of leftfield, breaking a 3-3 tie and propelling the Hawks to the 5-3 win over the visiting Terriers.
Hartford, which surpassed its win total from last season after splitting a pair of games with the Terriers yesterday, improves to 12-21 on the season with a 4-5 record in league play. Having played their final conference set with the Hawks, the Terriers drop to 11-19-1 overall and 2-4 in America East games.
Zuzana Kudernatschova tossed her second complete game of the weekend, conceding three runs on six hits while striking out five. Wacyk finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Chelsey Mooney was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one run and an RBI. The designated player this weekend, she collected six hits and three RBI on the series.
Hartford grabbed a 2-0 lead in its first at-bats and extended that lead to three runs in the bottom of the fourth before the Terriers made it a new ball game at 3-3 in the top half of the fifth. Searching for the go-ahead run, the Hawks stranded one runner on base in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but got the timely hit they were looking for in their final at-bats, with Jenice Aloyo singling to right field with two outs and Wacyk's second home run of the season finishing off the game.
The Hawks first two runs were produced by back-to-back hits off the bats of Wacyk and Mooney. With one out, Aloyo registered Hartford's first hit of the game, reaching base on a bunt single. After stealing second, the speedy outfielder was driven home on a deep two-bagger by Kelly, making the score 1-0. With two down, Mooney's third RBI of the series doubled her team's early advantage to 2-0 as it brought Wacyk around from second base.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks manufactured another run to extend their lead over the Terriers to 3-0. Mooney knocked her second hit of the game, a double with one out, and advanced to the hot corner in the ensuing at bat, a groundout by Sawyer Fried. She would then cross home for the Hawks' third run of the game using an infield hit from Melani Maxwell, a ball that the she beat out the throw at first base.
BU didn't let that three-run advantage last long, though, as it stormed back in the top half of the fifth using four hits to tie up the ball game. The middle of the lineup kicked-off the Terriers' rally as Roesch, batting out of the six spot, doubled to left centerfield and two batters later, scored on a single to left field off the bat of Fernandez.
Despite Hartford retiring Felbaum on an infield popup for the second out, the Terriers' spurt continued with Jayme Mask wrapping a single to left field and Lauren Hynes bringing in two runs, including the game-tying tally, on a bases-clearing triple down the left field line.
After coming back to tie things up, BU never posed a threat to grab its first lead of the game as Kudernatschova and the Hawks put down the final six Terriers they faced in order.
Tuthill, who earned the starts in all three games for BU, took the loss in the rubber match. She threw for 9.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out seven.
The Hawks are scheduled to play the final contest of a six-game home stretch on Thursday afternoon when they host the Connecticut Huskies for a single game at 4 p.m.
