Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Hartford baseball team dropped both ends of its Saturday doubleheader at Binghamton on Saturday with a 3-2 final in the first game and a walk-off 6-5 decision in the nightcap. The Hawks fall to 14-30 overall and 11-12 in America East action falling one spot in the standings to fourth place with seven games remaining in the regular season. The Hawks and Bearcats will close out the series on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch scheduled.

Seven Hawks finished the day with a pair of hits over both contests while three of those seven assisted in the scoring by driving in runs. Catcher Billy Walker led the way among those leaders going 2-for-2 at the plat with a double and was hit by a pitch. Nick Dummar came in a pinch hit role in both games and finished the day with two RBI.

On the hill, the Hawks starters combined to pitch 10.1 innings and allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on nine hits. In the early game, freshman Kyle Gauthier suffered the defeat allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. He also did not give up a walk and did not record a strikeout facing 21 total batters. Anthony Mannuccia closed out the first game without allowing a run on one hit in 1.2 innings of work. Mannuccia also struck out one.

In the second game of the day, Hawks starter Brian Hunter pitched six innings giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, while allowing just one hit. He also struck out five and walked five batters. Alex Gouin and Jeremy Charles both saw time in relief with the latter of the two suffering the loss. Gouin finished three innings of work allowing one unearned run on one hit while Charles recorded just one out but gave up two earned runs on one hit and two walks.

The Hawks struck first in both games. In the first game, Hartford scored single runs in the third and fifth innings while giving up all three Bearcats runs in the bottom half of the fifth. The Hawks first run came courtesy of back-to-back singles from Walker and Adam Touhey which put one runner in scoring position. Walker would score that first run when leadoff batter Trey Stover recorded his first hit of the game on a single down the left field line which allowed Walker to score from 180 feet away.

In the fifth inning designated hitter James Alfonso would lead off the inning with a single to right field before being pinch run for by Dummar who scored the run. Dummar would advance the first 90 feet on a sacrifice from Walker before an error at short stop allowed him to advance 90 feet from scoring. Third baseman Aaron Wilson would knock in that run as he sacrificed himself on a squeeze play.

The Bearcats three runs in their half of the fifth all came on one swing of the bat, a double from second baseman Daniel Nevares. That two-bagger, which was the ninth hit of the game for Binghamton, drove in Bill Bereszniewic, Dave Schanz and Jake Thomas. Bereszniewic led off the inning by being hit by a pitch while Shanz and Thomas loaded the basses each with one out infield singles.

In the nightcap, the Hawks score two runs in the top of the first inning to take the early advantage. With one out recorded Brian Estevez began a stretch of three straight singles. After he stole second the second single, from Brady Sheetz, allowed him to score from second while Sheetz stole second and was able to score thanks to Ryan Lukach who singled to center field.

The Hawks would add single runs in the third and fifth inning with Alfonso and Dummar recording the RBI. Alfonso provided the first run in the third inning when he drove in Sheetz on a double to center field. Dummar, sacrificed himself on a fly ball to center which allowed Lukach to score. Both Sheetz and Lukach reach on singles.

The Bearcats began to chip away at the Hartford lead with a single run in the fourth inning before tying the game at four and forcing extra innings with three runs in the seventh. In the fourth inning the Hawks gave up that first run after walking Brian Ruby with one out and allowing him to advance on a balk and a sacrifice before scoring on a wild pitch.

In the seventh inning, the Hawks were plagued by an error which extended the inning and allowed Schanz and Thomas to each knock in runs.

In the start of the 10th inning, the Hawks looked to put themselves in position to win scoring one run to take a 5-4 lead. Dummar would drive in the run on his first hit of the game, a single to centerfield, as he allowed Chris DelDebbio to score from second after reaching on a one out double down the left field line. Dummar would end up stranded at first to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Bearcats weren't fazed by the Hawks closer, scoring two runs for the walk-off doubleheader sweep. Thomas led off the inning with a single up the middle as he was the first of three-straight batters to reach safely. Thomas became the first run of the inning thanks to a fielder's choice from pinch hitter Reed Gamache. Nevares would score the game-winning run, also on a fielder's choice, this time thanks to the bat of catcher Nick Pancarella.
