Box Score 2 ARLINGTON, Va. – The University of Hartford baseball team dropped a pair of game in its season-opening series against the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday. In took 13 innings to decide a winner in the season opener with the Hoyas scoring in the bottom of the 13th inning for the 4-3 victory, while Georgetown scored a 6-3 victory in the night cap at Barcroft Field.
For the day, Hartford was led right fielder Ryan Lukach who finished with four hits, two in each game, extending his hitting streak to seven straight games dating back to the 2013 season. Centerfielder Chris DelDebbio posted the best single game for the Hawks, finishing the second game of the doubleheader 3-of-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Adam Touhey and Billy Walker also finished with two hits on the day, all four of which came in the second game.
On the mound, Hartford was led by their game one starter, lefthander Sean Newcomb who finished five innings of shutout work striking out nine batters, three shy of his career-high. Brian Hunter would start the nightcap for Hartford, giving up all six of the Hoyas runs in the loss. Hunter also struck out six batters. Reliever Alex Gouin suffered the loss in the opening game, pitching 2.1 innings of relief, all in the extra frames.
The Hawks first three runs of the early game all came without registering the first hit of the 2014 season. In the first inning the Hawks put a pair of run on the board thanks patience at the plate and on the bases. The first three batters of the game all registered walks which loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout registered the first out, James Alfonso worked the fourth walk of the inning, forcing in Trey Stover. The trio of bases runners all advanced one base on a passed ball, which included Aaron Wilson who scored the second run of the inning.
In the second inning, Wilson would again score, this time after reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Wilson followed that by successfully swiping his first base of the season and on the play a throwing error would allow the sophomore infielder to score from second. Lukach followed that running performance by registering the Hawks first hit of the season on a single to right field.
Despite giving up a walk and a hit in the first two innings, Newcomb struck out the side in each of his first two innings to secure the Hawks early shutout. The junior lefthander was pulled after five innings for sophomore Kyle Gauthier.
Hartford would hold the Hoyas scoreless through the first seven innings despite four hits but in the eighth, Georgetown would begin a comeback scoring two runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly. The home team would then tie the score in the bottom of the ninth utilizing a leadoff single from left fielder Patrick Camporini.
After the first three extra frames finished scoreless, the Hoyas scored the victory with a walk-off double from Nick Collins which scored Beau Hall who led off the inning with a walk. Senior Alex Gouin suffered the season opening loss, pitching 2.1 innings of relief work allowing just the one run on four total hits.
Lukach would close out the opening game with a pair of hits to lead Hartford. Alfonso finished with one hit, while also registering the lone RBI in the opening game. Stover and rookie David MacKinnon would round out the Hawks five hits.
In the second game, the Hoya took the early lead, building a 6-1 advantage after two innings. Hartford's lone run in that stretch came in the second inning after Chris DelDebbio and Adam Touhey led off the inning with singles. A walk issued to catcher Billy Walker would load the bases with no outs with DelDebbio able to score on a double play off the bat of senior Brian Estevez.
The Hawks would cut the Hoyas lead in half with a pair of runs in the eighth inning, both coming after a pair of outs was recorded. DelDebbio would begin the offensive threat with his third hit of the game, an infield single. He would be driven home on the next at bat as Touhey smacked the first extra-base hit of the season, wheeling out a triple down the right field line. He would be rewarded by Walker who drove him home with a single up the middle.
Hartford and Georgetown will close out the series with a single game on Saturday night with sophomore Brian Murphy scheduled to start for the Hawks. First pitch in the series finale is scheduled for 7 p.m.Â
