Box Score 2 FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Hartford baseball team dropped a pair of 1-0 decisions to the George Mason Patriots on Saturday at Spuhler Field. For the day, Hartford was led by senior James Alfonso who finished with three hits in seven at bats, while the Hawks finished with 14 total hits.
Junior left hander Sean Newcomb started the first game of the day, pitching 5.2 innings and facing a total of 22 batters. He finished the outing fiving up three hits and allowing the lone George Mason run, unearned. He also walked three batters and struck out six in the los. Senior Alex Gouin closed out the opener, pitching 2.1 innings without giving up a hit.
Senior Brian Hunter suffered the loss in the second game, pitching all six innings of a shortened game due to darkness. He would give up the lone run on five hits while striking out four. He also walked three batters.
Joining Alfonso in recording more than one hit in the two games was Aaron Wilson, Brady Sheetz and Trey Stover who all finished with two hits. All three of Alfonso's hits came in the opening game as he finished 3-of-4 at the plate. Wilson's two hits also game in the first game while Sheetz's two hits came in game two and Stover's were split over the two games. Â Five other players would all chip out one hit as the Hawks outhit the Mason 14-8 overall. All 14 of the Hawks hits were singles.
Hartford (0-5) and George Mason (8-2) will close out the series on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. The Hawks are scheduled to start sophomore Brian Murphy who in his first appearance gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits in two innings of work. The Patriots will start redshirt-senior Rich McMahon who will make his first appearance of the season.Â
