Box Score YAPHANK, N.Y. – Junior lefty Sean Newcomb and senior closer Alex Gouin combined for a six hit shutout as the University of Hartford baseball team defeated Sacred Heart 1-0 at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, N.Y. The Hawks, who improve to 4-6 in 2014, travel to Delaware to face Temple University Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
Newcomb and Gouin combined for 13 strikeouts as they held the Pioneers runners no closer than 180 feet from home plate. Newcomb, who has now pitched 24.2 innings without allowing an earned run, finished seven innings of work allowing a pair of hits and striking out eight. He now has a team-high 31 strikeouts for the season. In Newcomb's seven innings of just one Sacred Heart runner advanced past first base, that coming in the first inning as Zack Short stole second after reaching on a walk.
Gouin pitched the final three innings, earning his first victory of the season, stranding three runners on base. Overall, the right hander gave up four hits but struck out five batters, a season high and one shy of his career best, without registering a walk.
At the plate, Hartford finished with six hits including two in the extra frame with the second driving in the winning run. Centerfielder Chris DelDebbio led the Hawks with a pair of hits in four at bats, the second of which led off the 10th inning and eventually led to him scoring the winning tally. Shortstop Trey Stover finished with one of the four remaining Hawks hits, extending his season-long hit streak to 10 straight games. Ryan Lukach, Aaron Wilson and Adam Touhey all finished with one hit with Lukach's single to center in the 10th driving in DelDebbio.
Hartford and Temple will continue the Hawks three-game weekend with a single game at Caravel Academy in Bear, Del. (Directions) Senior Brian Hunter will start his fourth game of the season for Hartford. The right hander enters the game with a 5.62 earned run average allowing 11 runs, 10 earned, in 16 innings of work. He has also struck out seven.
