WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior lefthander Sean Newcomb extended his season-long streak of not allowing an earned run to 32.2 innings with an eight inning 3-0 shutout of the Binghamton Bearcats (5-12, 1-3 America East) as the University of Hartford (8-8, 1-1 America East) baseball team split its league opening doubleheader. Binghamton posted a 2-0 shutout in the second game of the afternoon.
Newcomb allowed just four hits and struck out eight batters with the Hawks defense pulling out a pair of crucial double plays to keep the blank slate intact. The victory for Newcomb is his second of the season, while he extended his league-leading total to 38 strikeouts. Senior Alex Gouin closed out the opening game, pitching a hitless ninth inning to collect his third save of the season.
In the second game, senior righty Brian Hunter went the distance for the Hawks allowed both runs, one of which was earned. Hunter gave up a total of seven hits and walked two batters while striking out a total of nine batters.
In the opening game, the Hawks broke a three inning stalemate with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. The first two runs went in the books as unearned for Binghamton starter Jack Rogalla, as the Hawks took advantage of a pair of errors.
The first of those miscues was a throwing error from third base which allowed Chris DelDebbio to reach safely and advance to second. A sacrifice bunt from Billy Walker advanced DelDebbio to 90 feet from home plate as he was able to score thanks to another sacrifice, this time a fly ball to centerfield off the bat of James Alfonso.
In the fifth inning, leftfielder Adam Touhey led off with a single to centerfield and advanced to second on a walk issued to Dalton Ruch. He was then able to score as the Bearcats second baseman overthrew first on a double play attempt that would have ended the inning.
The final run in the seventh began thanks to a three-bagger from Ryan Lukach which was followed quickly by a single up the middle from Touhey earning the second RBI of the game for Hartford. Overall, Touhey led the Hawks in the opening game as he finished 2-of-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Lukach and Wilson were the only other Hawks to record hits in the first game.
In the second game, Binghamton struck first utilizing a Hartford error to their advantage to score in the first inning. The second run of the game came by way of the only home run of the afternoon for either team, which came from right fielder Zach Blanden who lifted a ball into a stiff wind which carried his second hit of the game over the right field fence.
Hartford finished the second game with just three hits, two of which came from first baseman Brady Sheetz who scattered singles in his first two at bats. The only other Hawk hit came from the senior catcher, Alfonso.
Hartford and Binghamton will close out the league opening series on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. Freshman right hander David Drouin is expected to start for the home team.Â
