WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Centerfielder Chris DelDebbio's single through the right side and first baseman Brady Sheetz sacrificing himself to drive in DelDebbio led Hartford in an eighth innings comeback 3-2 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats on Sunday afternoon.
Hartford (9-8, 2-1 America East) secured its second series victory of the season taking two-of-three from the Bearcats (5-13, 1-4 America East). The series win over Binghamton, who is the reigning America East tournament champion, is the first in the all-time history of the two programs, which dates back to 2002.
The Hawks finished with just four hits on the afternoon with all four coming from different players but the two most important came back-to-back from Trey Stover and DelDebbio. The first of those hits from Stover went into right field and loaded the bases for DelDebbio. Adam Touhey and Aaron Wilson both reached safely when they were hit by a pitch and became the first two runs of the inning thanks to the DelDebbio's clutch hit splitting the first and second basemen.
Stover was also able to advance himself into scoring position on DelDebbio's hit as he took a pair of bases, stopping 90 feet from home. He was then able to score thanks to Sheetz who gave himself up to drive in the winning run on a high fly ball to right field with the throw home off the mark. The Hawks other two hits on the afternoon came from Ryan Lukach and Wilson who each singled in the early part of the contest.
The game began as a pitchers dual with the first six innings ending with zero's on the board. Hartford's starter, rookie David Drouin, went seven innings and gave up three hits. He was tagged with allowing the first Binghamton run of the game, a one out solo line drive home run from Jake Thomas in the seventh. Drouin would also finish the game with four strikeouts while not conceding a walk.
Sophomore Kyle Gauthier pitched a single relief inning in the eighth, giving up one run on two hits with a strikeout. The Hawks then called on senior closer Alex Gouin to close out the contest as he did, earning his fourth save of the season. Gouin did give up one hit but that runner ended the game stranded at third as Gouin forced the final two outs as groundouts to second.
The Hawks are scheduled for a pair of midweek games in the week ahead with the first of those coming away from West Hartford with a trip to Storrs on tap Tuesday afternoon. Hartford and the UConn Huskies are scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch at J.O. Christian Field on the Huskies campus.Â
