Baseball Walks Off with 3-2 Win Over UConn

Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior third baseman Brian Estevez's patience in the batter's box paid off as he earned a bases loaded, two out walk in the bottom of the ninth inning forcing in the game-winning run as the University of Hartford baseball team defeated the UConn Huskies 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Fiondella Field. Hartford improves to 10-8 in 2014, making this the winningest March in the Division I history of Hartford baseball (previously nine wins in March 1988).

Hartford finished the game with seven total hits led by left fielder Adam Touhey who finished 2-of-4 at the plate while five other players each chipped in one hit. Shortstop Trey Stover and third baseman Dalton Ruch were among those who finished with one hit, each driving in runs.

Stover's lone hit came by way of his first home run of the season as he lifted a line drive over the left field wall feet from the foul pole to tie the game at one in the fourth. Ruch then came through in a clutch situation in the fifth as he looped a single into left field allowing right fielder Ryan Lukach to score from second base which gave Hartford a 2-1 lead at the time.

UConn tied the game in the top of the eighth inning, using a fielding error on the Hawks to their advantage. That error extended the inning which allowed leftfielder Eric Yavarone to knock in Vinny Siena and knot the game at two runs apiece with nine outs remaining.

After Hartford was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, reliever Jacob Mellin pitched a one hit ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts to keep the stalemate in tact heading to the final half inning. Mellin would be credited with the victory for Hartford, his first decision of the season.

In the bottom of the ninth, senior catcher James Alfonso started the offense with a double that hit off the bottom of the wall in right center. After Lukach was intentionally walked, Touhey came to the plate and drilled a ball that split the left side of the infield and loaded the bases. After the second out of the inning was registered on a foul out, Estevez worked the count to 3-1 with the final pitch of the game sailing high out of the zone, forcing Alfonso to walk home for the game-winning run.

Hartford will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they host a second-straight Nutmeg State foe, the Fairfield Stags. The Hawks and Stags are scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch with freshman Brian Stepniak scheduled to start for Hartford.
