Johnson City, Tenn. – Junior lefthander Sean Newcomb threw seven scoreless innings, striking out eight batters, while first baseman Brady Sheetz knocked in the lone run in a 1-0 shutout of the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers on Friday night.
The Hawks finished the game with six hits while Newcomb allowed just two hits and closer Alex Gouin finished two innings without allowing a hit, facing the minimum six batters. Along with the two hits allowed by Newcomb he also walked three batters but fanned eight, his third time in three outings with six or more strikeouts.
At the plate, the Hawks were led by leadoff batter Trey Stover who finished 2-of-4 at the plate. The remaining four hits came from four different players with Sheetz's single in the third inning providing the lone run of the game. His single was the third straight in the inning. After a pair of strikeouts led off the inning, the Hawks used a single up the middle from Stover and a single to right field from Aaron Wilson to put their first runner in scoring position. Stover was able to score from second when Sheetz sent his lone hit of the game to right centerfield before a third strikeout ended the inning.
Newcomb worked out of trouble in the sixth, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position. The Buccaneers stranded a total of five runners with one more left in scoring position in the seventh. Newcomb would give up a pair of walks in the sixth inning, both with one out. Both runners advanced into scoring position with stolen bases but Newcomb closed out the inning with a pair of fly balls to centerfield.
The Hawks and Buccaneers will continue their three-game series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.Â
