Baseball Drops 4-1 Decision at Rutgers on Saturday

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The University of Hartford baseball team dropped its second of three games against the American Athletic Conference's Scarlet Knights 4-1 on Saturday at Bainton Field. The Hawks fall to 17-13 overall and will close out the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Freshman David Drouin is slated to start on the hill for Hartford.

Hartford finished with three total hits provided by shortstop Trey Stover, catcher James Alfonso and first baseman Brady Sheetz. The Hawks lone run came in the second inning with Sheetz earning a free pass when he was hit by a pitch. A dropped fly ball in centerfield led to the Hawks run as Sheetz was running on the play after two outs had been recorded and he was able to score from first base on the Scarlet Knights error.

That run held up for Hartford until the bottom of the sixth inning when Rutgers tagged starting pitcher Sean Newcomb for four runs using five straight hits, a double and four singles. Up to that point, Newcomb had allowed just four base runners on a walk and three hits, all singles. The loss for Newcomb is the second of the season.

Sophomore Jacob Mellin would close out the sixth inning for Hartford, pitching two-thirds of an innings without allowing a hit, retiring both players he faced. Senior Brian Hunter closed out the game pitching the seventh and eighth inning without allowing a run on one hit. He also  walked one and struck out three batters.
