Tennis Teams Fall at America East Championships

COLUMBIA, Md. – The University of Hartford women's and men's tennis teams each finished their seasons on Friday at the America East Tennis Championships. The Hartford women fell 4-0 to NJIT while the men dropped a 4-0 result to top-seeded Binghamton.

In the morning, the No. 6 Hawks squared off against No. 3 NJIT in a quarterfinal matchup. NJIT opened the match taking the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. The No. 2 doubles match, featuring Hartford freshmen Emily Sneddon and Madeline Makings, went unfinished with the Hawk tandem having claimed three games in the set.

The Highlanders picked up wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles to grab the four points required to win the match and advance.

Sneddon, playing at the No. 2 spot for the Hawks, won four total games in her match. The match went unfinished with Sneddon down a set and even at one game apiece in the second.

On the men's side, played in the evening, wet weather forced the No. 4 Hawks to take on No. 1 Binghamton indoors at the Green Spring Racquet Club. The teams skipped doubles play and went directly to the singles matches.

The Bearcats posted wins in the Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5 doubles matches to take the four points and advance to Sunday's championship final.

At the top spot, senior Jordan Badenko took three games, but dropped a 6-1, 6-2 result to Binghamton's Sid Hazarika. Sophomore Nicholas Sharwarko won six games in his No. 2 singles match. After falling in the first set, 6-3, Sharwarko was tied at 3-3 in the second when an overall match result was reached.
