BOSTON — The University of Hartford Department of Athletics placed 142 student-athletes on the 2019 America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll, the conference announced on Thursday. An impressive 70 percent of Hawks student-athletes receiving America East Academic Honor Roll distinction for achieving at least a 3.0 GPA, with over half of those recognized (86) earning Commissioner's Honor Roll status (3.5+ GPA).

Student-athletes who were members of the baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's track and field and softball teams for the Hawks and had a GPA of 3.0 or higher were named to the America East Academic Honor Roll. 
 
In total, Hartford had 251 of its 356 student-athletes (71%) earn a 3.0 or better in the 2019 spring semester, while 14 of 17 programs finished with at least a 3.0 GPA this past spring. 
 
The softball team knocked it out of the park in the classroom this past semester, as it was the only squad in the America East that had each of its student-athletes earn either Honor Roll or Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction. Ten of head coach Angie Churchill's student-athletes were placed on the Commissioner's Honor Roll, including sophomore Danielle Rocheleau, who registered a perfect 4.0 GPA.
 
In addition to softball, both men's basketball and baseball landed the highest percentage of honor roll student-athletes in the America East. Men's basketball had 81 percent of its roster receive the distinction, while 69 percent of Hawks' baseball players earned the status. 
 
Among the 12 student-athletes that made the honor roll for men's basketball under head coach John Gallagher, six were placed on the Commissioner's Honor Roll, while 12 of the baseball team's 24 honorees earned at least a 3.5 GPA under head coach Justin Blood.
 
Coached by Ryan Martin, men's lacrosse led the way with 25 Academic Honor Roll selections, including 15 who collected Commissioner's honor Roll recognition. Highlighting that team with perfect 4.0 marks are John Hennessy, Hunter Krauss, Zach Lanoue and TJ Summer.
 
The women's track and field team had 16 of its members earn Academic Honor Roll distinction. Under head coach Stacie Wentz, that team landed the most 4.0 GPAs with nine (Nicole Demars, Lydia Farmer, Courtney Hackman, Amanda Hamel, Sarah LeClair, Abby Myers, Olivia Rougeau, Meghan Savinelli and Allie Tedeschi). The men saw 15 student-athletes earn Academic Honor Roll distinction, five of which were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. 
 
Five women's lacrosse players — Billy McLaughlin, Emma Privitera, Jenna Pupillo, Jordan Smith and Lauren Wehner — led the way with 4.0 GPAs. In total, the squad landed 22 Honor Roll members, 16 of which received Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction. 
 
Highlighted by Lindsey Abed, a two-time America East Scholar-Athlete, and Kelly Douglass and Azariah Wade, who each earned 4.0 GPAs, women's basketball combined for 10 Academic Honor Roll selections.
 
Hartford men's and women's golf, which compete in the Big Sky and MAAC, respectively, also had successful semesters in the classroom under head coach Pete Stankevich. The women's golf team had each of its six student-athletes earn a 3.0 GPA this past spring, while men's saw five members earn at least a 3.0 GPA. 
 
A record total of 1,531 student-athletes who competed in America East sponsored winter and spring sports earned Honor Roll distinction, as a record-breaking 68.3 percent of the over 2,200 student-athletes earning at least a 3.0 GPA during the spring 2019 semester. Of that group, nearly 40 percent (38.4%) and 862 in total earned Commissioner's Honor Roll status for registering a GPA of 3.5 or better.
 
In total, a record 2,343 America East student-athletes were placed on the Academic Honor Roll in 2018-19.
 
The America East is proud to have one of the most comprehensive academic awards program in the country. In addition to the Honor Roll, an All-Academic Team comprising of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors for each of the conference's 20 sports.
 
Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes his/herself as the top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is named the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the Walter Harrison Academic Cup is awarded to the school with the highest cumulative GPA among its student-athletes for that academic year.
