More than a decade since its only other four-overtime game, the University of Hartford - unfortunately suffered the same fate by identical scores- losing to Commonwealth Coast foe Wentworth, 11-10, Tuesday at Al-Marzook Field.
The Hartford defense was phenomenal over the first three overtimes in keeping Wentworth off the board and keeping the tied. The Leopards launched 12 shots to Hartford's three in the overtime periods. There was a span in which Wentworth registered six shots on one possession.Â
However, WIT finally tallied the game-winner with 1:23Â remaining in the fourth overtime, ending the longest game in school history.Â
Sophomore Ryan Varano was responsible for getting Hartford into the extra time with the equalizing goal with 74 seconds remaining in the game. It came as the Leopards took the lead with a pair of goals in 17 seconds midway through the fourth period.Â
Sophomore Aidan Kemp notched three goals, while sophomore Ryan Varano notched a pair of markers.
The Hawks traded a pair of goals with the Leopards at the onset of the first period but found themselves down 6-4 at the half. The Hawks took control at the beginning of the third period scoring three straight goals to enter the fourth period tied 8-8.Â
