BOX SCORE
University Park, PA – The University of Hartford men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2009 season, a 1-0 double overtime defeat by Penn State in the final game of the Penn State Classic. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 2-1-1 overall, while the Nittany Lions improve to 4-1-0.
The Hawks held the host-team Nittany Lions off the scoreboard for 107 minutes until Penn State's Frank Costiliota sank a penalty kick past Hartford keeper Nenad Cudic to give Penn State the victory. The game-winner was Costiliota's first of the season.
"We played our hearts out today," commented Head Coach Dan Gaspar. "There's no shame in losing with two minutes left in second overtime to a quality Big Ten team, particularly after the overtime draw with Ohio State on Friday night. We earned the respect of our opponents and our team, our University and the America East conference. It was a good weekend for us, and when we recover from these two battles, we will be even more prepared for conference play."
The Nittany Lions controlled the pace of the game at both the offensive and defensive ends as they fired up 20 shots and only allowed the Hawks nine chances at the goal. The Nittany Lion's also held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-2. Penn State's stingy defense did not allow a Hartford shot in the extra periods of the game.
In goal, Cudic faced 10 shots on goal, allowing just the game-winning penalty kick. For Penn State, Warren Gross made two stops to earn the clean slate for the Nittany Lions.
Seniors Cedomir Tomcic and Ivan Guarinwere named to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team. Guarin notched the Hawks' lone goal of the tournament in Hartford's 1-1 stalemate with Ohio State on Friday evening.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 16 when they travel to Kingston, RI to face the University of Rhode Island Rams. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Last season, the Rams defeated the Hawks in double overtime by a 1-0 final in game two of the UMass Classic.
