Stony Brook, NY – Sophomore attack, Aidan Genik scored five goals to lead the Hawks, but Hartford couldn't hold off a second half barrage of Seawolves goals, falling to Stony Brook 15-12 on the road. Hartford falls to 3-7 overall, and are winless in conference play (0-2).
Genik's five goals led two other players with multiple goals in the game, while he also chipped in with an assist for six points. Justin Bearse and Carter Bender each added two goals for the Hawks, while Ryan Compitello finished with three assists to lead the Hawks.
Stony Brook came out of the gates and scored four unanswered goals within the first eight minutes of the game to take an early lead, one they would hold onto through the entire first half. One of two brothers competing against each other in the game, Tom Compitello led off the scoring with a goal at the 11:10 mark, when he connected with Steven Waldreck for his 16th goal of the season.
Kyle Belton and Waldreck then scored the second and third goals within 10 second of each other, extending the home teams' lead to 3-0 with 10:48 to play in the first period. Belton took a pass from Compitello, while Waldreck connected with Kevin Crowley for the third goal.
Crowley then put up the Seawolves final goal of the first period, when he scored his 27th of the season unassisted with 7:09 to play.
Hartford's offense answered by scoring the final three goals of the period, while the defense clamped down and held the Seawolves without a goal for the final seven minutes of the first period. The first Hartford goal came from the Hawks brother, Compitello, when he connected with Bearse for his eighth goal of the season.
Genik then extended his team lead in goals scored to 26 when he connected with Michael Cudmore to cut the Seawolves lead in half with 4:36 remaining before the first intermission. Martin Bowes then put one more score on the board for Hartford just over a minute later with an unassisted goal, his fifth of his sophomore season.
The teams split evenly six goals in the second period, with the Seawolves ending the period and the half with a one goal lead.
The Seawolves again struck quickly in the opening minutes of the second period with Crowley scoring the first two goals of the period within the first three minutes. Both of his goals were unassisted.
The Hawks answered by scoring back-to-back goals, both coming within 15 seconds of each other. Jared Franze scored the first of the two with an unassisted tally, his 17th of the season. Hartford's Compitello then returned the favor to teammate Bearse, assisting on the Hawks second score in the period.
The teams then split the final two goals of the period with the Seawolves Compitello scoring the first and Hartfords' Bender tossing in the second off an assist from Genik. Hawks keeper Scott Bement finished with six saves in the first half between the posts, while his counterpart Charlie Paar had three.
Stony Brook came out of the break with as much intensity as they started, outscoring Hartford 5-1 in the third period. Crowley opened up the scoring for both teams, scoring his fourth goal of the game with 9:1 to play in the stanza.
The Hawks only score in the period came from Bender, who connected with Curdmore with 5:30 to play in the period, pulling the Hawks back within three goals, 9-6. The Seawolves would then close out the half with three unanswered goals, including two from Tom Compitello.
A late run for the Hawks in the fourth period was held at bay, as Hartford could never pull closer than three goals. Back-to-back goals from Genik, including a man-up goal with 9:33 to play in the game, led to Hartford trailing 13-10, but the Seawolves answered by scoring two-straight to retake a five point lead, 15-10, one they would never relinquish.
Genik tossed in his fourth goal of the game in what looked like it could be a late comeback for Hartford, but the Seawolves defense only allowed one more goal in the game with 11 seconds left, again with Genik providing the offense. Genik finished the game with five goals, increasing his season total to 30, which leads the team.
Bement finished the game with 11 saves between the posts for the Hawks, while his counterpart finished with 10 for the Seawolves.
The Hawks men's lacrosse team will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Fairfield, CT for an in-state rivalry match-up against the Stags. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
