QUEENS, N.Y. – The University of Hartford men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at No. 20/19 St. John's University on Friday evening, snapping a two-game win streak. The Hawks fall to 2-3 on the season while the Red Storm improves to 4-1 with the win.
Junior transfer Jordan Bar stopped a career-best seven shots, suffering his first loss of the 2010 season. Classmate Patrick Boucher led the Hawks with a pair of shots, but could not manage to get his lone shot on target past St. John's net minder Rafael Diaz.
The Red Storm scored in the second minute of action and sealed the game with a score in the 73rd minute. St. John's added one more insurance tally at 82:03 to mark its third-straight victory – and third shutout of the season – in the books.
"Jordan had an outstanding performance for the Hawks on Friday evening," exclaimed Gaspar. "St. John's are worthy of their No.20/19 ranking. Playing the Red Storm was a tremendous opportunity and experience for our players. We showed moments during that match that demonstrated that we can play to their level. I am proud of the Hawks' battling spirit however it is now time to focus on Sunday's challenge against Rutgers, another quality Big East opponent."
Sophomore Omar Edwards put the Red Storm on the scoreboard early with his first goal of the 2010 campaign. With just 89 ticks off the game clock, the forward controlled a pass from teammate Pablo Battuto Punyed and snuck a shot from six yards out between Bar's legs to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
The Hawks' back line kept the stifling Red Storm offense at bay until the Hartford defense was penalized inside of the box at 72:55. Tadeu Terra, the squad's top scorer, connected on the penalty kick, sending the ball past Bar to double his team's lead to 2-0.
Adam Himeno added to the Red Storm's lead and put the game out of reach with his unassisted score at 82:03. The senior midfielder sent home his second goal of the season and the final goal of the contest from just eight yards out to give St. John's the 3-0 win.
St. John's held a commanding 20-6 shot advantage over Hartford and a mere 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Red Storm keeper Diaz was only tested two times in the contest, rejecting a shot from Rodriguez at the 4:44 mark and turning away Boucher's shot on target in the 67th minute
Hartford wraps up its weekend road trip with its second-straight match against a Big East opponent. The Hawks visit the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Sunday, September 19th for a 2:30 p.m. kick-off.
