BOX SCORE
RADFORD, VA. - Alex Gouin slammed his second home run in as many days on Sunday, but it was all the offense that the Hartford baseball team could put together as they fell for a third straight game at Radford, 22-1. Freshman
Kevin Veilleux started and took the loss for the Hawks, his second of the year as Hartford dropped to 0-7-1.
The Highlanders jumped on Veilleux for eight hits and six runs over 3.2 innings, and did not let up as head coach Jeff Calcaterra went to his bullpen. Already leading 9-0 in the sixth inning, Radford took advantage of a miscue by right fielder
Chris Suchy to score nine runs, seven of which were unearned. The Highlanders followed that two-out error with three singles and two doubles before
Myles Kelly induced a fly ball to end the inning.
With two outs in the eighth inning, freshman
Alex Gouin drove a Jacob Smith pitch up and over the right-center field fence, getting the Hawks on the board. Gouin now has a three-game hitting streak, with two of his three collegiate hits going for homers.
It was only the second time in the game that a Hartford player had advanced to second base, as the Hawks had managed just two hits, singles in the third inning from
Brian Estevez and
Victor Santana, to that point.
Alex Bulger would add a ninth-inning single to conclude the Hawks' offensive attack.
Radford tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the final margin to 22-1.
Hartford will have a day off on Monday as it goes from Radford to nearby Blacksburg, Virginia, where they will take on Virginia Tech in a two-game set starting Tuesday. First pitch between the Hawks and Hokies is set for 5:30 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
