Baseball Drops Third Game at Binghamton as Rain Postpones Series Finale

BOX SCORE

VESTAL, N.Y. -
After struggling to get runners on base in Saturday's doubleheader at Binghamton, the Hartford baseball team held a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning of Sunday's first game, but the host Bearcats stormed back for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim a third straight victory over the Hawks, 5-3. The second game scheduled between the two teams was postponed as rain intensified in the area, and will be played Monday morning.

The Hawks got on the board first with single runs in the first and second innings. Brian Hunter laced a double down the left field line with one out in the first, then scored two batters later when Matt Walker ripped another two-bagger to the gap in right-center field.

In the second, Chris Suchy blooped a single down the right field line to get the inning started. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rodger Wilmot, he scored on Alex Bulger's single through the left side of the infield.

Binghamton got on the board with a run in the fourth, but the Hawks responded in the top of the fifth when Simon Kudernatsch's RBI single plated Alex Bulger. Bulger, Suchy and Hunter all had two hits for the Hawks.

Hartford starter Anthony Mannuccia held the Bearcats to just the one unearned run through five innings, but worked his way out of trouble several times. In the sixth, his luck ran out as Bill Bereszniewicz came through with a big two-out double down the left field line that plated two runs, tying the score. After that, Mannuccia was lifted in favor of Kevin Veilleux, who promptly walked Daniel Nevares before Dave Ciocchi drove home both runners with his double to the gap in left-center.

Zach Juliano shut the door on the Hawks in the top of the seventh, sealing the victory.

With the rains coming down, the decision was made to postpone the second game of Sunday's doubleheader until Monday. Hartford will remain in Binghamton for an extra night, and will take on the Bearcats at 11:00 a.m. Monday morning looking to salvage a game from the four-game set.
