BOX SCORE
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Getting on base has not been too much of a problem for the Hartford baseball team. The Hawks got 10 hits in their series finale with Albany on Sunday, but went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position, scoring just once in a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Great Danes. With the loss, the Hawks were swept in the six-game season series with Albany and fell to 1-11 in America East play.
Anthony Mannuccia started and took the loss for the Hawks, allowing four earned runs over 6.2 innings of work. Zach Kraham was the winning pitcher, scattering eight hits and allowing just the one run over 7.0 innings.
Albany jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Greg Muller shot an RBI double down the left field line. Josh Nethaway brought Muller home two batters later with a single.
Hartford responded with a run in the bottom of the second.
Chris Suchy led off by drawing a walk, then after back-to-back pop up outs,
Brendan Behm walked to put runners on first and second. That brought the top of the order and
Victor Santana to the plate, and the junior designated hitter laced a single to right-center field. Suchy scored, but the inning ended a batter later when
Brian Estevez grounded into a fielder's choice.
The Great Danes added two runs in the third before Mannuccia settled down, allowing just one single over the next three innings. In the seventh, though, the Danes got a run when Josy Espinal drew a two-out walk and raced around on Ralph Rizzo's RBI double.
That hit drove Mannuccia from the game.
Kevin Veilleux was brought in and shut the door on the inning.
Ryan Lukach moved to the mound from his first base position for the final two innings, keeping Albany off the board while allowing just one hit.
Hartford went down in order just once in the game, getting a runner to third base in the seventh and eighth innings, and a runner to second in the ninth. Unfortunately, the Hawks could not come up with the big hit when they needed it, and could not add more runs after their tally in the second.
The Hawks will be back on the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when they host Dartmouth at Fiondella Field for a 3:00 p.m. game. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased by calling 860-768-HAWK.
