BALTIMORE, Md. – Making its second appearance in the last three seasons, the University of Hartford men's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to the #6 UMBC Retrievers on Saturday night in the league final. Hartford's Anthony Santaga, Javoni Simms, and Damion Lowe were all named to the America East All-Tournament team following the Hawks run back to the title game.
Hartford closes out the 2013 season with a 13-4-4 overall record which is the most wins for Hawks men's soccer since 1996 (17-6-1). The Hawks .740 winning percentage in 2013 is the highest in the Division I history (30 seasons). The winning percentage is also the highest since 1981 when the Hawks finished 15-3-0 (.833).
Hartford would be the first to threaten putting a marker on the board as senior David Bernhardsson fired in a direct kick from 24-yards out that required Phil Saunders grabbed out of the air for his first of two first half saves. A little over four minutes later, Rohan Roye served another ball into the box, but the Hawks were unable to put together the second half of the play.
The pressure continued from Hartford less than two minutes later when Aleko Petridis battled for a loose ball 26 yards out and after dribbling forward a couple yards sent an angled shot on goal that deflected off the right upright and out of bounds.
UMBC marched straight down field off the re-start to put the first goal in the books as Pete Caringi connected with Jordan Becker, whose cross into the box deflected off a Hawks defender. Caringi found a header opportunity off the deflection that he chipped over the keepers head into the upper right corner.
After a pair of unthreatening attempts from both squads, Hartford's coming from Bernhardsson, the Carinigi looked to strike again with his second attempt saved by Hawks keeper David MacKinnon.
Hartford would be awarded the first corner kick opportunity of the night when a free kick from Roye, from well outside the box, curved down towards the upper right corner but Saunders was able to slap the cross attempt just out of bounds, earning his second save of the half.
UMBC would provide the next three opportunities, including a pair of attempts in the 11th minute. The second of those, from Kardeem Darces, forced MacKinnon into action for his second save of the night.
The Retrievers struck early in the second half, extending their lead to 2-0 working off a second-straight corner kick. Oumar Ballo was in position on the opposite post of the corner re-start and was able to head a shot to the lower corner before the defense could recover. Carinigi and Gaeton Caltabiano each picked up an assist on the play as Caltabiano provided the re-start and Carinigi re-directed that service.
A little over five minutes later UMBC added a second insurance goal, the second of the game for Carinigi. His second marker came as a diving header, receiving the long cross deep into the box from Malcolm Harris. UMBC's final score of the night came courtesy of a penalty kick, awarded with under five minutes remaining in the contest.
The Hawks best look at scoring in the second half came with 31 minutes remaining when Simms worked around a pair of defenders ricocheting his shot off the right upright and over the end line.
