Lacrosse Comes From Behind to Score 15-14 Win at Siena

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Brad Hutton's first goal in a Hawks' uniform proved to be his team's most important tally of the young season, as it sent the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team past the Siena Saints, 15-14, in the final minutes of play at Siena Turf Field on Saturday afternoon. The win is the first for Hartford this season as it improves to 1-3.

Junior Andrew Cacchio and rookie Jack Bobzien each had five points to lead the offense. Cacchio netted a career-high four goals, sophomore Kevin O'Shea recorded a hat trick while Rory Nunamacher and Bobzien also finished with multi-goal games as the Hawks took down the Saints (1-5) for the first time since 2010.

After trailing 7-2 to start the second quarter, Hartford found its groove offensively and used a 6-2 spurt to come within one goal of Siena before the conclusion of the period.

Nunamacher sparked the rally, scoring on an assist from Tate Klidonas at the 11:54 mark. Kyle Curry pushed his Siena's lead back to five less than 40 seconds later but the Hawks countered, scoring two-straight to close the gap to three. O'Shea got on the board with his first marker of the afternoon at the 10:15 mark of the second and out of the ensuing face-off, Klidonas made it 8-5 just nine seconds later.

Curry again stopped the bleeding for Siena but it was only a temporary fix as the Hawks rattled off three more unanswered scores to close their deficit to one at 9-8 with 5:03 remaining before the end of the half. That rally was ignited by O'Shea at the 8:41 mark before Cacchio capped things off after delivering back-to-back goals.

Siena pushed its lead back to two with a last second goal to end the half, and went on to take an 11-8 lead early in the third on another Curry goal, his fourth of the outing. Cacchio then notched his fourth goal, sparking another 3-0 Hartford run that tied the game up at 11-11 with 9:20 left in the third.

The two squads then exchanged goals three times with Kieran Donohue putting Siena ahead for the last time with 9:28 left on the clock. Mid-way through the final quarter, Bobzien's unassisted score again knotted the score, this time at 14-14 with 6:58 remaining, before Hutton delivered the dagger on the man-up opportunity with 3:39 left to play.

Hartford outshot Siena, 50-35 but fell behind in faceoffs as the Saints won 19-of-32 draws. Junior Frank Piechota made three saves and allowed seven past before he was replaced by Dan Zenevitch, who also let seven goals in while making six stops.

Joining Curry with multiple goals for the Saints were Conor Prunty (2), Donohue (3) and Richie Hurley (2).

The Hawks square off at local rival Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m.
