Box Score BEAR, Del. – The University of Hartford baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to the Temple Owls on Saturday afternoon at Caravel Academy. Hartford will close out its three games in three states weekend with a Sunday matinee against La Salle at Hank Devincent Field with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
Against Temple, the Hawks finished with five hits all coming from different players with first baseman Brady Sheetz leading the way going 1-of-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Billy Walker and outfielders Chris DelDebbio and Ryan Lukach each drove in runs with Walker and Lukach adding one hit each to their credit. Designated hitter James Alfonso and left fielder Adam Touhey rounded out the Hawks who finished with one hit.
On the mound, senior right hander Brian Hunter finished his fourth start of the season with a no decision, pitching four innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits. He also walked three and struck out four batters. Sophomore Sam McKay suffered the loss, his first of the season, as he gave up a pair of earned runs on four hits in two innings of work. Classmate Jacob Mellin pitched the final two innings without allowing a run while giving up one hit.
The Hawks put the pressure on Temple early on taking a 4-0 lead just three innings into the action. Â The first of those runs came in the top of the first inning as Sheetz and Walker went back-to-back with a single and double, respectively. Sheetz was able to score from first on Walkers two-bagger thanks to a fielding error.
Hartford final three runs came in the top of the third inning with Sheetz, DelDebbio and Lukach all driving in the tallies. Temple's pitching then held the Hawks to just one base runner over the next five innings, retiring 15 Hawks in order before Hartford threatened in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Alfonso singled to right center and was pushed into scoring position when Aaron Wilson was hit by a pitch. Both would end up stranded as Touhey flew out to right field to end the game.
