Lacrosse Falls in Quadruple Overtime Thriller to Siena

Box Score
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- It took four overtimes to decide a winner Saturday afternoon as Siena defeated the University of Hartford 11-10 in men's lacrosse action on Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The Hawks drop to 2-3 on the season while the Saints improve to 3-2.

Colin Clive scored the game-winner for Siena, his eighth goal of the year, to decide the contest with 1:31 left in the fourth overtime. The Saints rallied from a 7-2 deficit early in the third quarter to pull out the win.

Junior Ty Schuldt collected the hat trick to lead Hartford including a pair of goals in the opening quarter as the Hawks raced to a 6-2 lead. Siena grabbed an early 1-0 lead before senior Alex Matarazzo assisted senior Andrew Cacchio for the first of his two goals to even the score with 5:44 left in the first quarter. Freshman Alec Brown put Hartford in front just 40 seconds later making it 2-1. Schuldt registered his first goal on the man advantage with 4:31 left for a 3-1 lead. The Hawks scored three times in the final 3:19 as freshman Jaedon Henderson and Cacchio netted tallies before Schuldt registered his second man-up goal making it 6-2 at the end of one quarter.

Neither team scored in the second frame but Hartford extended its lead to 7-2 just 1:28 into the third quarter when senior Conner Yatauro scored an unassisted marker. The goal was his second of the season. Schuldt's seventh goal of the year at the 7:26 mark made it 8-3 and the Hawks appeared to be in control but Siena responded with four goals of its own to cut the advantage to 8-7 with 12:26 left in regulation time.

Junior Kevin O'Shea netted an unassisted goal, his first of the contest and team-leading 15th of the season, to give Hartford some breathing room 4:47 into the fourth quarter. However Siena responded just seven seconds later to cut the lead back to one at 9-8. The Saints then scored twice in the span of 38 seconds to take a 10-9 advantage with 5:38 remaining in regulation time.

Henderson forced overtime for Hartford with his second goal of the game and fifth of the season off a feed from senior Greg Reynolds. The Hawks possessed the ball for the final 1:05 of the fourth quarter but O'Shea couldn't get a shot on goal before time expired.

Hartford won the opening face-off of the first overtime. The Hawks set their attack and Reynolds rifled a shot off the post giving Siena possession. Senior goal Frank Piechota made the first of several terrific overtime saves with 1:25 left while his counterpart Tommy Cordts answered with a save at the other end to force another overtime.

Hartford took possession again early in the second extra session but couldn't generate a shot on goal. Siena regained control with 2:45 left and the Hawks survived a point-blank miss by the Saints before taking over again.  O'Shea hit yet another post with under 30 seconds remaining with the carom ricocheting down the right sideline to send the teams into their third extra frame.

The Hawks emerged with the ball again to start the third overtime and held possession for virtually the entire period. Five shots were fired five by Hartford in the stretch but the Hawks again couldn't get anything on net.

Siena gained control to start the final session and immediately called a timeout. The Saints nearly ended it just seconds after the stoppage but Piechota made his best save of the day stopping a shot from just a few feet away to keep Hartford alive. Hartford's last chance to win came with roughly three minutes left but Cordts answered with another save on a shot by O'Shea. That set up Clive's game-winner ending it with 1:31 left.

Hartford finished the afternoon with a 54-41 advantage in shots. Siena edged the Hawks in ground balls, 41-39 and face-offs, 16-12.

Hartford returns to action this Wednesday in another home contest against Quinnipiac at 4 p.m.
