Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team never recovered from an early deficit at UMBC on Saturday and fell, 16-11, to the Retrievers in America East action. The Hawks (5-8), who wrap up their regular season home schedule at home on Saturday against Vermont at 7 p.m., fall to 0-3 in the conference while the Retrievers (6-5) improve to 2-1 in league games.
Hartford's offense featured eight different goal-scorers, highlighted by a four-point effort from
Jaedon Henderson. Coming off a five-goal game against Dartmouth on Tuesday, the freshman scored twice and added a pair of assists. Also recording multiple goals for the Hawks were
Andrew Cacchio and
Matt Carroll.
Scoring the first five goals of the afternoon, UMBC led, 7-2, before the end of the first quarter, a stretch that featured a pair of Retrievers' scores from Ryan Johnston. Redshirt junior
Adam Yee got the Hawks on the board at the 7:50 mark to end UMBC's game-opening run. Following Johnston's second goal of the quarter, senior
Greg Reynolds made it a 6-2 contest before Dylan McDermott regained the Retrievers' five-goal edge before the end of the period.
The offense picked up for the Hawks in the second, but they were never able to come any closer than four goals before the halftime break. Outscoring UMBC, 3-2, in the stanza, Henderson, Carroll and Cacchio each struck to make it a 9-5 game heading into the locker rooms.
Out of the break, Hartford closed the gap to three on an unassisted score from
Kevin O'Shea 71 seconds in. UMBC again had an answer, scoring four minutes later to push the lead back to 10-6, before
Conner Yatauro and Henderson went back-to-back within 33 second span for the Hawks to trim the deficit to two at 10-8 with 7:24 to go.
Just as it opened the game, UMBC finished the contest strong, accounting for five of six goals within a 13-minute span and netting six of the game's final nine markers to secure the win. Leading the Retrievers was Pat Young, who had a game-high five goals, while Connor Gordan had 13 saves in goal.
Yee went 17-of-30 at the faceoff X, helping the Hawks finish with the advantage in the category. UMBC converted on 4-of-7 man-up opportunities while Hartford had one man-up tally in three chances.
