Touhey Paces Hawks with Three Hits in 5-3 Win Over Quinnipiac

Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore leftfielder Adam Touhey finished with three hits and an RBI to lead the University of Hartford baseball team to a 5-3 victory over in-state rival Quinnipiac University on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, which snapped a nine-game win streak for the Bobcats, the Hawks improve to 22-14 overall, matching the win total from the most recent 20-win season which came in 1994 (22-27).

Touhey's three hits were part of seven total for the Hawks with the remaining four coming from different players. Included in the other four hits was a double from freshman David MacKinnon who drove in two runs in the third with his lone hit of the game. Right fielder Ryan Lukach and catcher James Alfonso also finished with RBI's for Hartford while Alfonso added one hit, also a double.

Hartford's starter sophomore Brian Murphy pitched a career-high seven innings, earning his second victory in four decisions. The right hander was tagged for allowing three runs, all earned, while giving up 11 hits, stranding eight Quinnipiac runners aboard. Murphy also recorded three strikeouts but did not issue a walk.

Sophomore reliever Jeremy Charles closed out the game pitching two innings without allowing a run earning his first save of the season and seventh of his career. Charles faced just one batter of his minimum, giving up one hit while not walking a batter and striking out one.

After Quinnipiac opened the scoring with a single run in the third inning, made possible by a leadoff triple, Hartford took its lead for good with a three-run third inning. The Hawks used four hits in the third, including three straight to lead off the inning. The first in the string of hits was a single from centerfielder Chris DelDebbio which was followed by back-to-back doubles from Touhey and MacKinnon. The latter of those hits drove in the game-tying and go-ahead runs. The final RBI of the inning came courtesy of the third double of the game, this time from Alfonso.

The Hawks added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings with both courtesy of two Bobcat errors. A bases loaded walk issued to Lukach in the fourth drove in the fourth run of the game while Touhey drilled a single up the middle in the sixth with both runs in the fourth and sixth scored by DelDebbio, who crossed the plate three times in the game.

The Hawks return to the diamond in 24 hours when they travel to Bill Beck Field at the University of Rhode Island. Hartford and URI are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday afternoon.
