Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team saw its 2014 campaign come to an end on Friday night, as it suffered a 14-10 loss to Stony Brook at LaValle Stadium in a win-and-in regular season finale. The Hawks finish the season 6-9 overall (1-4 AE) while the Seawolves (6-9, 2-3 AE) advance to the opening round of the America East Championships as the fourth seed to take on the top seed, which will be determined tomorrow night in a battle featuring Binghamton and UAlbany, the league's two unbeaten teams.
The Hawks got off to a strong start offensively, recording the first two goals of the game in the first five minutes, but they were never able to make a full recovery after conceding the contest's next four scores to Stony Brook. Falling behind by as many as three in the first half, Hartford managed to trim its deficit down to 7-5 before the intermission and pulled within one at the start of the third thanks to a goal from
Conner Yatauro. The Seawolves were quick to provide an answer, though, as they surged for five of the game's next six goals to build a 12-7 advantage, one they would hold on to despite a late Hartford run.
Despite stringing together two-straight goals to pull within three at 12-9 early in the fourth, it wasn't enough for the Hawks to muster up a comeback.
Tate Klidonas provided a goal in the closing seconds of the third to start the run, which was later extended by O'Shea early in the fourth, but it was too little, too late. Ryan Bitzer and Matt Schultz held off the Hawks late resurgence and put the contest out of reach by scoring at the 12:11 and 8:10 marks to extend their team's advantage to a comfortable 14-9 margin heading down the final stretch.
Pacing the Hawks' offense was O'Shea, who registered a game-best six points on one goal and five assists, a career-high. Chipping in with two goals apiece were seniors Yatauro, Klidonas and
Andrew Cacchio and freshman
Alec Brown.
Brad Hutton rounded out the scoring for Hartford, which will miss the America East Championships for the first time in four years.
Senior goalie
Frank Piechota made a plethora of point-blank saves for Hartford to finish with 10 in his final game as a Hawk. The Hawks held the 35-32 edge in shots but suffered disadvantages in ground balls (39-35) and faceoffs (17-11). Stony Brook was led by hat tricks from Mike Rooney and Chris Hughes. Rooney added an assist to finish with four points.
