Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – The University of Hartford baseball team dropped its series finale against the UMass Lowell River Hawks by a 3-2 final on Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park. Hartford falls to 29-18 overall and 15-5 in the America East, one game behind the Stony Brook Seawolves for first place in the league. The Hawks close out regular season with a three-game set against the Seawolves next weekend at Joe Nathan Field in Stony Brook, N.Y.
Senior James Alfonso and junior Brady Sheetz provided the RBI's in Sunday's loss with Alfonso's coming as a solo home run over the right field fence with two outs in the fourth inning which knotted the game at one run apiece. Sheetz's RBI came in the top of the ninth when he singled to right field with two outs driving in Ryan Lukach who reached base on a walk.
Overall, the Hawks finished with six hits, matching the River Hawks in the series finale. All six of the Hawks hits came from three different players with Chris DelDebbio, joining Alfonso and Sheetz with two each. Alfonso's two hits extend his team-leading hitting streak to 14-straight games. The Hawks left five runners on base, including two in scoring position.
Reliever Sam McKay suffered the loss for Hartford, falling to 6-2 on the season. The sophomore right hander threw 1.2 innings in relief of classmate Kyle Gauthier who pitched the first seven innings. McKay gave up the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth, while allowing just one hit and striking out one batter. Gauthier allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits with four strikeouts.
Prior to the Hawks regular season series finale at Stony Brook, Hartford will host the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils for the final home game on Tuesday, May 13. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 12 p.m. at Fiondella Field.
