Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – The record setting season for the University of Hartford baseball team came to a close following an 8-0 loss to third seed Binghamton in an elimination game at the America East Championship at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass. Hartford closes out 2014 with a school-record 31 victories, the first 30-win season in the history of the program.
In addition, left handed ace Sean Newcomb set a school record with 243 strikeouts, the first pitcher in school history to punch out at least 200 batters. His career ERA of 2.73 is also the second lowest in program history, while he is projected to be a first round pick in the MLB draft on June 5th.
Fellow pitchers, senior Brian Hunter and classmate Alex Gouin also closed out their careers among the all-time leaders. Hunter with 182 strikeouts, tied for second most all-time and Gouin setting a single season record with nine saves. Offensively, seniors James Alfonso and Brian Estevez round out their careers in the record book with Alfonso fifth all-time with 44 doubles and Estevez leading the program all-time with 39 total sacrifices, eight fly balls and 31 bunts.
Rounding out the records set in 2014 is first baseman Brady Sheetz who stormed up the all-time putouts list, closing out this season 14 shy of breaking the school record which stands at 1,135.
In Saturday's loss to the Bearcats, Hartford was led by rookie third baseman David MacKinnon who was one of two Hawks to earn America East All-Championship honors. He finished the series finale with two hits in four at bats, starting the game 2-for-2 at the plate. For the tournament, MacKinnon hit .583 with seven hits in 13 at bats while driving in one run. Newcomb was the second Hawk named to the All-Championship Team after striking out 14 Bearcats in the tournament opener on Friday.
On the mound, sophomore Kyle Gauthier suffered the loss falling to 4-1 for the season. In one inning of work he allowed five earned runs on five hits, all of which came in a row to open the game in the bottom of the first. The final three Bearcats runs were tagged to reliever Jeremy Charles who pitched three innings out of the bullpen allowing three runs, all earned on five hits and two walks.
Earning the win for the Bearcats was Greg Ostner who pitched a complete game in his first start of the season after making 19 appearances out of the bullpen. Hartford as a team combined for six hits off of Ostner, who also walked on batter and struck out four. Chris DelDebbio, Ryan Lukach, Aaron Wilson and Brady Sheetz all finished with one hit in the final game of the season.
