Late Goals by Lowe and Simms Lift Men's Soccer Past Penn, 2-1

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After 70 minutes of scoreless soccer between the Hawks and Quakers, sophomore Damion Lowe and rookie Javoni Simms each netted a pair of late goals 13 minutes apart to lead the University of Hartford men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Penn on Sunday afternoon.

With what proved to be the game-winning tally, Simms, who has scored a team-best four goals, helped the Hawks level their overall record at 3-3. Penn remains without a victory on the year and falls to 0-4.

Penn held a commanding lead in shots with a 24-13 edge, including an 11-5 margin in the opening stanza, but it was Hartford that proved to have the efficient offense as it connected on two of its last eight attempts to jump out to the late 2-0 lead.

In the 71st minute, Lowe provided Hartford with the advantage after tracking down a rebound from fellow teammate James Stamopoulos. Off a corner kick, Stamopoulos blasted a ball towards Max Kurtzman but Lowe was in place to clean up the shot as he beat the Quakers' keeper and netted the first goal of the match after getting the bounce off the right post. The marker was the first for Lowe this season.

The ensuing minute generated two-straight chances for Penn to find the back of the net for the equalizer. Rookie keeper Viltsu Tuumi, who finished with five saves on the match, came up huge in the series for the Hawks as he was in place to reject back-to-back shots off the boot of Stephen Baker to prevent the home team from reaching the scoreboard.

Simms provided the heroics in the 83rd minute by doubling Hartford's lead to 2-0 late in the match. On a corner kick scrum, which was initiated by Stamopoulos, Simms put his foot on the ball and sent it through the Quakers' defense to seal the game in favor of the visiting squad.

The Quakers' offense picked up momentum with Austin Kinn and Bryan Yasukochi each taking shots, but both of those attempts were blocked by Hartford's swarming defense in the 84th minute. Penn finally lit up the scoreboard in the final minute of play as Travis Cantrell corralled a ball and beat Tuumi to cut his team's deficit in half with just 42 seconds remaining. Following the kickoff, Penn was unable to move past midfield and could not complete the comeback.

Junior Anthony Santaga led Hartford with four shots and joined freshman Anthony LoBello and Lowe with two shots on goal apiece. LoBello attempted three shots for the Hawks.

The Hawks resume action on Wednesday when they return home for just the second time this season by hosting the Massachusetts Minutemen at 7:00 p.m. Hartford has held the upperhand recently in the series as it has scored three-straight victories over its foes from the north.
