Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – Three RBI from Brady Sheetz and an RBI double from Ryan Lukach lifted the University of Hartford baseball team to a 4-3 12-inning victory over the George Mason Patriots in the final game of a three-game series with the Atlantic 10 foe.
Earning the Hawks first victory in 2014 was reliever Sam McKay who pitched two of the extra frames without allowing a run on one hits and striking out one. Sophomore Brian Hunter started the contest for Hartford and he was tabbed with allowing two of the Patriots three runs. David Drouin, Kyle Gauthier and Jeremy Charles all saw at least two innings of relief with the latter two of those not allowing a run over a five innings stretch. Charles also led the pitching staff with three strikeouts while Gauthier added a pair.
Sheetz led the Hawks at the plate with his three RBI, all coming on a double in the fifth inning, clearing the bases and providing a 3-2 lead at the time. He would finish the game with a pair of hits, tying James Alfonso and Billy Walker in leading Hartford. As a team, the Hawks finished with nine total hits.
George Mason opened up the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning with third baseman Blaise Fernandez leading the offense in the inning with the longest hit of the day, a triple down the right field line.
Leading up to Sheetz's two out base clearing double was a pair of hits from Walker and Brian Estevez. Following a fielder's choice that allowed Trey Stover to reach safely was a walk to Aaron Wilson which loaded the bases for Sheetz. The first baseman would then connect on the first extra-base hit in the series for his squad which allowed Wilson to score from first for the one run lead.
The Patriots tied things up in their half of the fifth inning using back-to-back doubles from outfielders Luke Willis and Tyler Tobin. Hartford's pitching staff would go on to strand eight batters in the final six innings, including a pair in scoring position in the 11th inning.
With two outs in the top of the 12th, the Hawks would combine for back-to-back doubles leading to the game-winning run. Both two-baggers went to left field with the first off the bat of Sheetz. He was then able to score when Lukach mimicked his hit which was the first and only of the game for the right fielder. In the bottom half of the 12th, McKay would allow one batter to reach on a single up the middle but closed out the game with a fly ball to right field.
Hartford will return to the diamond for their third three-game series of the season when they travel to East Tennessee State University March 7-9. The Hawks and Buccaneers will open the series with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. at Thomas Stadium. Â
